Troop History

Troop 2, chartered by The First United Methodist Church of Picayune, is the second oldest troop in the state of Mississippi, and one of the oldest Troops in the Southeast. Troop 1, chartered in 1916, in Jackson is the oldest Troop in Mississippi. Troop 2 is part of the Tung Belt District, which encompasses Hancock, Pearl River and Stone counties. L.O. Crosby established Troop 2 in 1919 and it is the oldest continuously chartered troop in the state.

Chartered Organization: First United Methodist Church of Picayune

Scouting’s adult volunteers provide leadership at the unit, district, council, and national levels. Many are parents of Scouts and many entered Scouting as youth members. Each chartered organization establishes a unit committee, which operates its Scouting unit, selects leadership, and provides support for a quality program. Most unit committees depend on parents for membership.

Scouting uses a fun program to promote character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness for every member. You can help by encouraging perfect attendance, assisting with your child’s advancement, and attending meetings for parents. Many of the Troop 2 Scouts have been awarded the God and Church Award for religious activities, and the First United Methodist Church conducts a Scout Sunday service every February in recognition of Scouting month.
